Ask Joshua - Do I have to get a nightstand?

Hi Joshua,

I just moved into my first apartment and thinking about getting some new furniture for my bedroom. I really don’t like nightstands just because I don’t like how they look; too bulky and blocky for my taste. I’m wondering what other alternatives there might be that would work best for my bedroom and don’t look like a traditional nightstand.

Thanks!

Hi Jonathan,

First of all, congratulations on your first apartment! Secondly, you don’t have to do anything “traditional” in any space that you don’t like or isn’t working for you. But if you’re still wanting some type of bedside storage or place to set a light or alarm clock, yes, there are alternatives for nightstands. You can do a minimal look such as a side or accent table with little or no storage space under it. That will help to to minimize the blockiness you dislike, keep it open and airy, but still give you something functional. I’ve included an inspirational photo above for your reference.

Warmly,

Joshua
