One Room Challenge - Spring 2020 l Week 7 - Plants

ORC Week 7.jpg

Wow! It is hard to believe that we’re in the last week of the One Room Challenge! I’m happy to report that we’re nearing the finish line with our little San Francisco dining room project. This week, we’re adding plants in the space to bring it all alive!

With the current situation around the country, shopping has been a challenge! Plants are not something I’ve ever ordered online before, but luckily some local garden stores have stepped up their online game to adapt to the current business demands and challenges. So, we made some purchases online with curbside pickup. Fortunately, some home improvement stores are designated essential and often include gardening departments, so Jeffry and I made a few trips to different local stores to find the plants we wanted.

We ended up purchasing succulents for our new terrarium, golden pothos for a new hanging planter, and lastly, mass cane for the floor planter. We also picked up a couple of new plants around our home as well; we couldn’t help it! Live plants make us so happy! Now….just to keep one of the cats from eating them….

I am in charge of taking care of the plants since I am the only person in our household that has a green thumb. Jeffry has a love/hate relationship with plants and we can’t afford to keep replacing the ones he kills. But, I do let him help me pot them!

Hanging plants are great for spaces that don’t have horizontal spaces to place anything on and they provide vertical interest for the eye. The golden pothos we got was one of the online orders; you know, ordering from a picture can be risky. It ended up being much larger than I anticipated, but I’m not complaining! The fullness really brings a lushness to the space and bonus…it’s super easy to maintain!

I originally purchased this planter because I loved the unique design of it, but it provided us a challenge; the top diameter is only 10 inches but then widens before it narrows again. It’s been difficult to find a small indoor tree that would fit in this planter and yet maintain proper proportions since most indoor plants we saw that were appropriate were in 12” pots or larger. We finally found the right one, a mass cane which actually was in a 12” pot diameter but wasn’t a deal-breaker. In repotting, the two different cane stalks had separate root systems and we could fit them in separately. I’m so blown away by the contrast of how bright these leaves stand against the midnight blue walls. Pop, pop, pop!

I’m excited to report that we’ve finally finished our dining room project. There’s just a little bit of table dressing to do and we’ll reveal to you all the final and full pictures next week! Stay tuned for that! I’d love to hear what you think of our new plants by leaving any comment below.
