Ask Joshua - What should I put on a former fireplace wall?

Hi Joshua,

We moved into our house about 6 months ago and we just got some new furniture set up for our living room. The situation is that the previous owner removed the fireplace from our living room!!! We’re planning on putting one back in (the chimney is still there), but it’s a project for later when we have the budget for it. For now, we placed two couches facing each other with a coffee table in the middle. The wall between the windows is where the fireplace used to be there and where one will go again. In the interim, what should be do with that wall without spending a bunch of money?

Much thanks,

Kyle - San Jose, California

Hi Kyle,

Thank you for the question on your fireplace situation. I know it can be hard to understand why someone would want to remove a fireplace since they typically increase house value. However, I think you’re already off to a great start with your living room furniture setup and choices. So, since you are planning to add a fireplace back in your living room I’d recommend simply getting a large art piece for that wall to help fill up the void but also help putting the living room together and look complete the look for the time being. Once you add the fireplace, you can use the same art above the fireplace, or use it in another room.

Warmly,

Joshua Jones
