Ask Joshua - Inherited Sectional and Stumped

Hi Joshua,

I inherited a sectional…which is great because it was free and it’s in great condition. The problem is it’s u-shaped. I’ve never considered a u-shaped sectional before and I’m not sure how to make this work in my living room. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi Nicole,

That’s great you scored a free sectional, as they can be pretty pricey for a quality piece. Definitely, L-shaped sectionals are much more common than the u-shaped variety.

So, the benefit of a U-shaped sectional is providing more seating. As well, it fosters a more intimate seating arrangement because it naturally requires placing furniture closer together and draws in the conversation space. I’ve posted a picture above that I think illustrates how to simply arrange a couple chairs and coffee table with the sectional that works really well.

At first glance it might seem a little clausterphobic and tight quarters with little leg room around the coffee table. Obviously you can play with that by introducing a round coffee table that will give a little more space to move around it.

Notice in this example, they’ve used very open work cane chairs instead of heavy or blocky chairs. This gives the space a little more breathing room; but that’s completely up to you and your style and the vibe you want to create in your space.

I hope this was a helpful. Have fun with your new furniture!!
