Ask Joshua - Are curved sofas hot right now?

Hi Joshua,

I’ve noticed that curved sofas seem to be popping up all over the place. One of the latest design trends? I love how it looks but I am wondering what are the pros and cons about having a curved sofa compared to the regular one?

Thanks!

Hi Jane,

I’m glad you asked about curved sofas as being one of the latest design trends and some of the pros and cons about it! I’ve also noticed it has become popular this year since I’ve had quite a few requests from my e-design clients that they were interested in a curved sofa themselves. I’ve also seen it show up frequently in other designer’s work and social media. So, yes, they are kind of hot right now. But, I do want to warn about design FOMO and running out and buying pieces because of trends. Curved sofas are great, but they aren’t new, and their popularity will probably go through another cycle again. Here are some of my perspectives on them.

The curved sofa offer a great solution for small space instead of having a sectional as they tend to be less blocky and visually less imposing in a space; it does open up the space and improve flow. It’s great for socializing as they naturally allow people to more comfortably look at each other when seated, though I’ve also seen people pair curved sofas together facing each other. Believe it or not, some people actually use them as banquette seating!

I would say that typically they are not ideal to relax and watch TV unless you get a large enough size, it has extra depth, or you get the version that chaise attached (yes, curved sofas with attached chaise do exist!). They most often don’t have a high back for support for lounging and relaxing. Lastly, they can be challenging to deliver into your house if you have a narrow hallway, stairs, or doors due to the fact that it is curved which can be difficult to move around narrow corners.

Hope that helps!

Warmly,

Joshua
