Ask Joshua - Why should we invest in our bedroom?

Hey Joshua,

My wife and I have been debating about giving our bedroom a major makeover. She wants an upscale look but I think she’s crazy for wanting to spend so much on our bedroom. I don’t think we should spend much since no one but us sees it. It’s on the second floor and any guests or family hang out on the first. I’m totally okay with spending money on our living, dining, and family rooms since we use it a lot and think it’s worth investing a little bit more. Am I totally in the wrong here? Can you help us find a compromise? By the way, we love your work!

Thanks,

Justin - Phoenix, Arizona

Hi Justin,

Thank you for writing in with a great question about investing in your bedroom. That is common debate many couples have, really about any room, but especially about a bedroom if the only thing you do there is sleep. I will point out few things to help you maybe see another perspective.

You do have a point about no one really sees the room but the two of you. However, your wife might be going for an “upscale” look with furniture or materials because she’s trying to create a retreat and space that feels like a luxury resort as a way to recharge. Surrounding yourself with beauty, which does not necessarily mean expensive things, helps some people find peace and serenity.

Secondly, you might not realize that having an updated primary suite will help increase the property value and can see a return on the investment since it’s a major selling point and very desirable for most home buyers.

So, you don’t have to spend a lot of money on fancy furniture and accessories but you can invest in nice and good quality furniture, accessories, and thoughtful materials and details to create an upscale looking bedroom. That would be good compromise of being a little more mindful of money while still honoring the space your wife wants to create.

Good luck,

Joshua
