Ask Joshua - Is Black and White Checkerboard Tile Flooring Timeless?

Hello Joshua,

My husband and I are in middle of a major house remodel and we are trying to decide what type of flooring we should install in our foyer area that goes all the way though the hallway to the backdoor entry area plus will extend into the laundry room. We are looking at black and white checkerboard tile flooring options. We think it would look good in our 100 years old home and most of the rooms have white wainscoting, except the laundry room. My husband is concerned that might dated since he hasn’t seen any recently remodeled homes with it. I can imagine it would look nice, but want your opinion on the matter.

Thank you,

Matt - Washington, D.C.

Hi Matt,

Thank you for asking a great question about whether white and black checkerboard tile flooring is timeless or not. I feel that it’s a timeless look, it’s been around for a really long time and I don’t think it’s gone out of style for older or newer homes….if done with the right quality materials. Based on the plans you shared with me and some photos, that you’re on the right direction for this project. Simply because you don’t see something copied across multiple other homes, doesn’t mean it won’t work in yours. It will also differentiate your home and have slightly more unique character. I’m confident that it will be GORGEOUS when it’s all done. :)

Best of luck,

Joshua
