Ask Joshua: Are White Kitchen Cabinets Still in Style?

Hi Joshua,
I recently bought a new house and I’m planning to remodel the kitchen. I’m in love with white cabinets but I’m worried that they might go out of style soon. What are your thoughts on this?

Thank you,
Kelly - Los Angeles, California

Hi Kelly,

This is a great question—and one I’ve been hearing more often lately.

The short answer is yes, white kitchen cabinets are still in style. They’ve been a staple in kitchen design for years because they create a clean, bright, and timeless look.

What has changed, though, is how white is being used.

All-white kitchens used to be the go-to choice, but today, design is shifting toward warmer and more layered spaces. That means stark, bright white kitchens can sometimes feel a bit flat or overly sterile if everything is the same tone.

That said, white cabinets themselves are not outdated. They’re still one of the most versatile options you can choose.

In my own design work, I continue to use white cabinets regularly—especially when a client wants a light and airy feel. The difference is that I almost always balance them with contrast. This might include warmer wood tones, softer paint colors, textured materials, or more interesting hardware to give the space more depth and personality.

Another reason white cabinets remain a strong choice is their longevity. Because they’re neutral, they adapt well as trends change. You can easily update the look of your kitchen over time by changing elements like lighting, backsplash, or hardware without needing to replace the cabinets themselves.

If you love white cabinets, I wouldn’t avoid them just because trends are evolving. Instead, focus on how you pair them with other materials to create a space that feels current and inviting.

At the end of the day, your kitchen should feel like it belongs to you—not just follow what’s trending.

I hope that helps!

Joshua
