Ask Joshua: Where Can I Find Affordable Original Art?
Hi Joshua,
I love art. And sometimes I have a budget to purchase original works. And sometimes I don't. For those who are working with a tight budget but still want original art on their walls, do you have any tips?

A thoughtfully curated gallery wall can help create a collected look over time without requiring a large investment in a single piece of artwork. Designed by virtual interior designer Joshua Jones of JJones Design Co., 3D rendering by Stuccco.
Hi Crys,
Original artwork doesn't have to come with a gallery-sized price tag. Over the years, I've found artwork in some unexpected places, and many of those pieces cost far less than what people typically associate with original art.
One place I always encourage people to explore is local art fairs and artist markets. Many talented painters, photographers, illustrators, and mixed-media artists sell their work at these events. Some farmers markets also include local artists among their vendors. While these events sometimes get dismissed as places to find crafts or souvenirs, I've seen some impressive artwork available directly from the artists themselves. It's also an opportunity to meet the artist, learn about their process, and support local creative talent in your community.
Artist open studio events can also be worth visiting. These events allow visitors to tour working studios, see artwork in progress, and browse a larger collection than what may be displayed at a market booth or gallery. Depending on your location, local arts organizations often host open studio tours throughout the year.
For online shopping, Etsy is often one of the first places I recommend. While many people associate Etsy with handmade crafts, it has become one of the largest marketplaces for independent artists. You'll find everything from original paintings and photography to illustrations, mixed-media artwork, and digital art downloads in a wide range of styles and price points.
Minted is another resource worth exploring. The company features artwork from independent artists around the world, many of whom are discovered through design competitions and community voting. It's a great option for homeowners looking for artwork that feels curated without gallery-level pricing.
If you're specifically interested in original artwork, Saatchi Art can be a valuable resource. The platform focuses heavily on original paintings, photography, sculptures, and mixed-media pieces while helping connect buyers directly with artists from around the world.
Artfully Walls takes a more curated approach. Rather than searching through thousands of listings, the platform features carefully selected artwork and collections that make it easier to discover emerging artists and create a cohesive look throughout your home.
Chairish is another favorite source of mine because it combines art, vintage finds, and one-of-a-kind pieces. It's a great place to browse if you're looking for artwork with character or something that feels less mass-produced.
Digital art has also become increasingly popular in recent years. Many artists now offer downloadable artwork that can be professionally printed and framed in a size that works for your space. This can be an affordable way to support independent artists while creating a custom look for your home. It's especially useful for gallery walls, larger statement pieces, or anyone decorating on a tighter budget.
I also wouldn't overlook estate sales, antique stores, and consignment shops. Finding the right piece can take some patience, but these places occasionally reveal original artwork with character, history, and personality that would be difficult to find elsewhere.
Personally, I think some of the most interesting homes include artwork collected over time rather than purchased all at once. Whether it comes from a local artist, an online marketplace, an estate sale, or a digital download, the pieces that tend to have the most impact are the ones that mean something to you.
Warmly,
Joshua
