Ask Joshua: How Can I Make My Rug Work in a New Home?

Hi Joshua,

I recently moved into a new home, and while I love the extra space, my favorite area rug doesn't fit the living room as well as it did in my previous house. It's now too small, but I really don't want to replace it because I love the colors and it still looks brand new.

Is there a way to make my rug work in a larger room, or do I need to buy a new one?

You definitely don't have to give up your favorite rug. This is actually a common challenge after moving into a larger home, and fortunately, there's an easy solution.

I'd recommend placing a larger neutral rug underneath your existing rug. Natural fiber rugs, such as jute or wool, work especially well because they add texture without competing with the colors or pattern of your favorite rug. The larger rug helps anchor the furniture in the room, while your original rug becomes a decorative layer on top.

Layering rugs is a great way to make a smaller rug feel intentional rather than undersized. It also adds warmth, depth, and texture to the space while allowing you to keep a rug you already love.

When choosing the larger rug, make sure it's appropriately sized for your living room so at least the front legs of your furniture can rest on it. Your existing rug should sit comfortably on top with enough of the larger rug showing around the edges to create a framed look.

I've included one of my projects above as an example. Notice how the larger neutral rug provides the foundation, while the smaller patterned rug adds color, personality, and visual interest without feeling out of place.

This approach not only saves you from replacing a rug you love, but it's also a simple way to create a layered, designer-inspired look.
