Ask Joshua: Why Do Some Sofas Look Great Online but Terrible in Real Homes?
Hi Joshua,
I’m starting to feel really frustrated and don’t know what to do at this point. Here’s the backstory: last year I ordered a sofa online that looked absolutely beautiful on the website, and I was sure it would look the same in my living room. Unfortunately, when it arrived it looked completely different in my space and just didn’t work, so I ended up returning it.
After that, I found another sofa that I fell in love with, but I ran into the same problem again. This time the color looked totally different from the photos online, and the tone was so off that it started driving me crazy. I had to return that one too.
I really want to finish my living room and move on from this sofa hunt, but now I feel stuck and worried I’ll keep making the same mistake. Do you have any advice on how to avoid this problem and finally choose the right sofa?
Thank you,
Hannah in Boston, Massachusetts

Hi Hannah,
What you experienced is actually very common when buying sofas online. Product photos are usually taken in carefully staged rooms with professional lighting, which can make a piece look slightly different than it will in a real home. Once the sofa arrives and sits in your living room with your wall color, lighting, and other furniture, the overall look can change quite a bit.
Scale is often one of the biggest surprises. In product photos, it’s difficult to judge the true proportions of a sofa. A design that looks perfectly balanced on a website may end up feeling too bulky, too small, or simply out of proportion once it is placed in the room.
Color differences are another frequent issue. Lighting conditions, photography editing, and even your computer or phone screen can affect how a fabric appears online. When the sofa arrives in your home, the color is influenced by natural daylight, interior lighting, and the surrounding finishes, which can make the tone look noticeably different from the website photos.
Before ordering your next sofa, it helps to request fabric swatches whenever they are available so you can see the material in your own space. I also suggest reviewing the dimensions carefully and marking the footprint of the sofa on the floor with painter’s tape. This simple step can make it much easier to visualize whether the size and proportions will actually work in your living room.
If the retailer has a store or showroom in your city—or even in a nearby city—it can be worth making the trip to see the sofa in person. Sitting on it and seeing the color and proportions firsthand can give you a much better sense of whether it will work in your home. Just be sure to call the store ahead of time to confirm that the exact sofa you’re considering is available on the showroom floor so you don’t waste time making the trip.
Finding the right sofa can take a little patience, but once the scale, color, and layout all work together, the living room tends to come together quickly. If you're still deciding on the right piece, you may also find my guide on choosing the right sofa for different sitting areas helpful.
Warmly,
