Most Popular Design Trend Requests by E-design Clients in 2019

Happy New Year! It is hard to believe that it’s 2020 already! I hope you had as wonderful a 2019 as mine was. I want to share with you some of the most popular design trends requested by our e-design clients in the past year. I believe that these design trends may last through 2020 and beyond. Maybe these requests will surprise you and perhaps inspire you for a new look and feel for your space in the year to come.

Patterned Tile

In the past year, I had numerous e-design clients requesting patterned tile for the kitchen backsplash or fireplace. I provided an example of one of my e-design projects, a California Beach House kitchen remodel project above that shows a Moroccan style tile pattern that creates an accent wall. I love it because it makes a great statement. You can have fun with the patterned tile and still look fabulous for your space as long as it is done right.

Bold Colors & Dark Walls

In the past year, I am getting more and more requests from our e-design clients that they wanted to have bold colors or darker walls. I love it when our e-design clients are not afraid of going bold with the design. That is a great way to create a space that is the true representative of you and your personality. This dining room I designed for one of our e-design clients which is shown above is one of the boldest designs that I have done in the past year. You can see that having darker walls doesn’t necessarily make your room dark; you can make it feel lighter by mixing it with lighter colors just like the dining room design above. Life is short, let’s have fun with colors!

Reading Nook

In the past year, I noticed that reading nooks became very popular; it’s a perfect way to fill up some dead space or extra space for any room that you’re not quite sure what to do with. For example, I created a reading nook for a large Desert Rustic style master bedroom which is shown above. This space was so large and made our client unsure what to do with extra space so I came up with the solution to create a reading nook to make their master bedroom look complete. I enjoy helping our clients to design the perfect reading nook that meets their needs and within their budget.

Global & Mudcloth Pillows

I have worked with many different clients all over the USA and Canada with different style preferences such as California Casual, Modern Bohemian, Mid Century Modern, Scandinavian, and more in the past year. The most common pillow style selections that are preferred by our clients are global or mudcloth styles because both often look really great with different colors and finishes but also very comfortable. The global style pillow uses more natural textures with different kinds of fabrics from around the world. Mudcloth style pillows utilize African tribal patterns, typically lines or arrows, to create simple, yet striking design. You can see examples of both pillow styles on one of my projects above.

Mixing Art

Many of my clients love a particular piece of art they’ve collected, perhaps from their travels, but struggle how to style it with the rest of their room. You almost never go wrong mixing different art styles or pieces. For example, I designed a California Casual style living room, shown above, that uses different art types such as abstract, photography, and watercolor painting. I managed to make it look good with the rest of the living room design. There are a couple more examples of mixing arts together on this blog.

Hanging Chair

Believe it or not, I’m seeing more and more people want to install a hanging chair inside their homes in the past year. I know it may look unusual since we usually see them being set up for the outdoor but it can look very stylish and comfortably right in your home too. It can be used for the kid’s room, playroom, bonus room, living room, and reading nook. This California Beach House living room I worked on that has a hanging chair is also for the reading nook within the living room to fill up the extra space. You can see the example of it above.

Rattan

Yes, you heard that right. Rattan is very popular these days now. I am getting a lot of requests to include rattan in the past year. I personally love the material because it can be fun but cozy stylish, also budget-friendly for some of our clients with a fixed budget. Rattan is one of those things that are timeless which would stay in style for a really long time.

I shared these most popular requests by our clients in the past year but I am looking forward to seeing if these types of requests would continue going on this year or will I get different kinds of requests? We will have to wait and find out! What do you think of these requests or what do you think will become a popular design trend for this year? Please leave your comment here!
