Ask Joshua - Countertop color for modern rustic industrial bathroom

Joshua,

We’re building a nice small 2 bedroom 2 bath house. The cabinets for kitchen and bathrooms are knotting alder, which I am having the cabinet maker stain clear for a light natural wood look. I love modern rustic industrial. My walls are all going to be white with a few accent walls in black. (The exterior of my house will be black with a another shade of black. The beams used are all natural clear wood.) My question is with my natural wood cabinets in the bathroom I am not sure of counter top color (granite) I should go with?? The sink will be square white with black modern fixtures (already purchased). I purchase the wall lights to go on each side of the vanity mirror they are from All Modern and are modern style black X with touch of gold on end where the edison light bulb go into to. Thank you for your time to read this.

Hi Lori,

Congrats on building your home! It’s quite a process, but it sounds like you’ve got a lot under control, which is not an easy thing to do on a build! Based upon your description of your overall home, style, and color scheme I have two color recommendations for your bathroom counter. First, you can always go classic natural white. It will go beautifully with the natural knotty alder and fit perfectly with your overall black and white scheme. Since you want to go with a natural granite, a little bit of very light grey speckle or veining would be ok. A second option would be a darker gray counter. This would be a little bit more bold and definitely stand out in the space, but still pair very well with the cabinetry and fixtures you selected. If you go with a darker counter, I would also suggest darker faucets as shown in the photo above.

Good luck on the rest of your build and I’d love to see a picture when it’s complete!

Warmly,

Joshua Jones
