Ask Joshua: Does Every Foyer Need a Rug?

Hi Joshua,

I need your advice about our foyer.

My husband and I recently moved into a home in Tustin, California, and I'm struggling to decide whether we should put a rug in our entryway. We have three young kids under the age of 10 and two energetic dogs, so our foyer sees a lot of daily traffic. Between shoes, backpacks, sports equipment, and muddy paws, it can feel like a busy highway at times.

Part of me loves the idea of adding a rug because the space feels a little bare and unfinished right now. I think a rug would make the foyer feel warmer and more welcoming. However, I'm worried it will quickly become dirty, collect pet hair, and require constant cleaning. We also have beautiful hardwood floors that I'd like to show off.

Do you generally recommend a rug in a foyer, or is it perfectly acceptable to leave the floor uncovered? If a rug makes sense, what type would you recommend for a family with young children and dogs?

Thank you,

Melissa – Tustin, California

Hi Melissa,

In most cases, I recommend adding a rug to a foyer, but it is not a requirement. A well-designed foyer can look beautiful with or without one. The right choice depends on your flooring, lifestyle, and how you use the space.

For many homes, a rug helps make the foyer feel more welcoming and complete. Since the foyer is often the first space guests see when they enter your home, a rug can help define the area, add color and texture, and soften the look of hard flooring. It can also help protect hardwood floors from daily wear and tear caused by shoes, backpacks, pet traffic, and other everyday activity.

If you have hardwood flooring, I especially recommend adding a rug near the entry. While Southern California is known for its mild climate, it still experiences rainy periods throughout the year. During particularly wet winters and El Niño storm seasons, family members, guests, children, and pets can track in water, dirt, mud, and debris from outside. Over time, that extra moisture and wear can take a toll on hardwood floors. A durable rug acts as a protective layer and is often much easier and less expensive to replace than repairing or refinishing damaged hardwood flooring.

That said, there are situations where skipping a rug can be the better choice. If you have beautiful hardwood flooring, patterned tile, or a smaller entryway, leaving the floor uncovered can help showcase those features and make the space feel more open. Some homeowners also prefer to avoid a rug in high-traffic areas because of the additional cleaning and maintenance.

In your case, with three active children and two dogs, I would still lean toward using a rug. The key is selecting a rug that is designed to handle real life rather than choosing something delicate that will become a source of frustration. A low-pile rug, flatweave rug, indoor-outdoor rug, or washable rug can all work well in a busy foyer.

Washable rugs have become especially popular in recent years because they make it much easier to deal with muddy paws, spills, dirt, and everyday messes. Brands such as Ruggable, Revival Rugs, and Boutique Rugs offer washable options in a wide range of styles, colors, and sizes that can stand up to busy households while still looking stylish.

If you decide to skip the rug, I would focus on other elements that help the foyer feel finished, such as artwork, a mirror, lighting, a console table, or decorative accessories. Sometimes these additions are enough to create a welcoming entryway without covering the floor.

My recommendation is to start with a durable, washable rug that complements your hardwood flooring. It will help define the space, protect your floors, and make your foyer feel more inviting while still standing up to the demands of a busy family.

Warmly,

Joshua Jones
