Introducing My Scandinavian Pattern Design Series: Clean Lines, Natural Beauty, Timeless Style
After months of creative development, I’m thrilled to introduce the third collection in my growing pattern design series—the Scandinavian Collection. Since launching my Art Deco series in February, followed by the Abstract series, I’ve been exploring different design styles that speak to me. This latest collection channels the calm, timeless elegance of Scandinavian design—but with a bold twist.
Rooted in minimalism, yet designed to stand out, these new patterns feature clean lines, organic symmetry, and a fresh perspective on Nordic-inspired style. Rather than sticking to the usual soft and quiet motifs, I’ve infused each design with just enough boldness to make a statement—perfect for those who love modern simplicity with a bit of edge.
In this post, I’ll introduce you to all five new Scandinavian patterns, each with its own story, mood, and design intention. Whether you're a fellow designer, a home decor lover, or just drawn to Scandinavian aesthetics, I hope this series inspires your next creative spark.

Butterflies
This design is especially close to my heart. For my Scandinavian-inspired Butterflies pattern, I focused on creating a minimalist interpretation—featuring clean, simple butterfly silhouettes in just two contrasting colors. Rather than showing intricate details, the beauty lies in the form and rhythm of the shapes—perfect for those who appreciate subtlety with a modern Scandinavian twist.
The inspiration behind this pattern comes from a meaningful part of my childhood. One of my aunts worked for Insect Lore and frequently gifted me butterfly-raising kits. I loved watching the transformation and releasing the butterflies into our flower-filled backyard—it became a cherished ritual growing up. My most vivid and emotional memory of butterflies happened years later, at my grandmother’s funeral. That same aunt brought decorative triangle-shaped boxes that allowed us to release butterflies in her honor. It was a beautiful and symbolic gesture I’ll never forget.
Creating this pattern allowed me to express that joy and nostalgia in a clean, contemporary design that fits effortlessly into modern interiors. Whether you’re drawn to butterflies for their symbolism or simply love their graceful shapes, I hope this piece brings a sense of lightness and serenity to your space.
The Butterflies pattern is available in four scale options—extra large, large, medium, and small—and can be ordered as both wallpaper and fabric. The 3D rendering of the Scandinavian nursery room shown above features the extra-large version, creating a bold yet gentle focal point that’s perfect for a calming space.
Mockup room featuring the “Cascades” wallpaper in large scale, dark mint and mint colorway—pattern designed by Joshua Jones of JJones Design Co., shown in a minimalist Scandinavian-style setting via Spoonflower.
Cascades
Living in the Pacific Northwest, you don’t have to go far to see the beauty of the Cascades—they’re practically everywhere you look. As someone who enjoys overcast skies and moody landscapes, I’ve always found inspiration in the way the mountains look on a gloomy day. That soft mist drifting between each ridge, the layered silhouettes fading into the clouds—it creates a calm, almost dreamlike atmosphere that I wanted to capture in this design.
The Cascades pattern blends organic, undulating forms with a minimalist Scandinavian sensibility. It’s not just about the mountains—it’s about the feeling they evoke on a misty, gray day. The subtle repetition and tonal layering make this pattern ideal for those who love cozy, grounding interiors with a touch of nature-inspired calm.
This design is available in three scale options and comes in a mix of neutral and bold colorways, allowing for versatility whether you’re using it as a statement wallpaper or a soft fabric accent.
Photorealistic 3D rendering of a Scandinavian-style breakfast nook designed by virtual interior designer Joshua Jones of JJones Design Co., featuring the “Water Surface” wallpaper in black and white.
Water Surface
Surrounded by the waters of the Puget Sound, the Seattle area offers endless inspiration—whether it’s the ocean, bays, lakes, rivers, canals, or quiet creeks. On my days off, I love spending time near the water. No matter how busy the city feels, the movement of water and play of light off its surfaces always brings me a sense of calm and clarity. That feeling inspired this pattern.
The Water Surface pattern is an abstract interpretation of the gentle ripples and rhythmic flow of water. Using a series of hand-drawn lines to mimic the movement of water, I created a design that’s both soothing and minimalist—true to the essence of Scandinavian design. It’s meant to evoke that peaceful, meditative feeling you get when watching the water, whether from a lakeside bench or a breezy shoreline.
This pattern is available in three scale options for both wallpaper and fabric, and comes in a curated selection of neutral and bold colorways—perfect for bringing a sense of zen into any space, from modern bedrooms to spa-inspired bathrooms.

Topography
Having spent my entire life along the West Coast—from California to British Columbia—I’ve always been surrounded by mountains. Whether hiking through them or flying over them, they’ve become a constant source of inspiration. One of my favorite moments is looking out the plane window and seeing the dramatic ridges and contours of the terrain below—details we rarely notice when we’re on the ground.
That perspective sparked the idea for my Topography pattern. I wanted to capture the layered beauty of mountainous landscapes from above, but with a modern, abstract twist. Instead of following traditional topographic map styles, I broke up the lines and played with spacing to create a more artful, Scandinavian-inspired design. The result is a pattern that feels grounded in nature yet contemporary and minimal.
This design is available in two scale options and comes in a range of light to dark colorways, making it easy to customize for your space. Whether used on wallpaper or fabric, Topography adds quiet movement and depth—perfect for creating a statement wall or adding texture to soft furnishings.
Mockup image from Spoonflower featuring the “Abstract Pine Cones” wallpaper in black and white, designed by Joshua Jones, shown in a contemporary restaurant setting.
Abstract Pine Cones
Pine cone patterns have been around for years—and if you’ve seen one, you’ve probably seen them all. Most tend to follow the same visual formula with only slight variations. I felt it was time to reimagine this classic motif and push it in a bolder, more creative direction.
My Abstract Pine Cones pattern brings a fresh take to a familiar subject. By stripping away the expected details and reworking the shape through a more minimalist, abstract lens, I was able to create a design that feels distinctly Scandinavian, yet completely original. It’s bold, graphic, and visually intriguing—perfect for anyone looking to break away from the overly traditional or rustic interpretations of pine cones.
This pattern is available in three scale options and a variety of colorways—from soft neutrals to rich, bold tones. Whether used as wallpaper or fabric, it brings a unique, nature-inspired touch to modern interiors without sacrificing simplicity or style.
I hope you’ve enjoyed exploring my new Scandinavian pattern design series as much as I loved creating it. Each pattern in this collection is deeply personal and thoughtfully crafted to bring simplicity, warmth, and character to modern spaces. In addition to being available as wallpaper and fabric, these designs are also featured on a growing line of products in my Etsy shop, JJones Design Studio—including hardcover journals and gift wrap papers. And this is just the beginning. I’m currently working on even more exciting product offerings that will feature these patterns, so stay tuned for upcoming releases!
Whether you're decorating your home, searching for unique gifts, or simply drawn to Scandinavian aesthetics with a fresh twist, I invite you to explore the full collection and bring a little more calm, creativity, and personality into your everyday spaces.
