California Casual Luxury Living Room

If you are into neutral colors (which doesn’t mean boring) but also appreciate the luxury look of California Casual then you might want to check out this living room I designed! Some of you may already know that California Casual is one of my favorite styles to work with and after receiving requests from our followers I decided to do one for our latest Top Picks collection.

I designed this living room that comes with a great view. You pay a premium in real estate for that so I don’t want the design to take attention away from the view so this design focuses on high-end neutrals. I personally like a formal living room to have furniture centered in the space instead of against the walls; it’s pulling the overall room look together. As you can see in this example I’ve got a classic furniture layout that encourages conversation; two sofas facing each other with two accent chairs.

Custom designed recessed built-in shelves around the living room make the space more interesting and leaves it feeling very open and airy while still providing a place to display your books and collections. Sconces added on top of each unit spotlight the collections and provide a gallery feeling without being stuffy.

Here is a close up of the shelving details. You can see how you could style it with a mix of arts, collections, books, and functional storage bins. For this design, I styled it with some symmetry to balance the look but if you’re not a fan of symmetry, you certainly don’t have to style that way. For this shelf design, I left a larger open space at the top to make room for larger pieces while the rest of the shelves can be spaced 12” to 15”.

If you have a wall, even a small one, and not sure what to do with it and you don’t need extra storage, this wall is an example of how to utilize it in a minimal way. A bench, framed knit quilt for texture, and accessories to fill up the dead space to help balance the overall living room look.

You should go big with the rug for a large space like this but you also can have fun with rugs by layering a second rug such as a tribal, cowhide, sheepskin or shag rug on the larger area rug. For example, I placed a large jute rug with a tribal rug layer on it to make it cozy.

While this living room was designed in mind to appreciate the view, you can still play with a signature chandelier to make the space look elegant. I chose something modern, light, minimal, and open, which is perfect.
