Ask Joshua - What to do with an awkward space.
Updated for 2026 with additional guidance on banquette design and dimensions.
Hi Joshua,
I recently bought a newly built suburban house just outside of Portland and I have an awkward space next to the kitchen that I have no idea what to do with. It is a 9’x5’ space. I already have a dining room on the other side of the kitchen and I have my own office in this house. It is too small to use it as a family room. Any idea of what to do with it?
Thanks!

Hi Greg,
That’s a great question—and it’s actually a very common design challenge.
One of the most effective ways to make use of an awkward space like this is to turn it into a built-in banquette. It allows you to maximize seating without needing as much clearance as traditional dining chairs, which makes it especially useful in tighter or underutilized areas.
It also helps define the space so it feels intentional rather than like an afterthought. With the right materials and styling, a banquette can become a really inviting and functional part of the home.
From a design perspective, it’s a great opportunity to introduce texture through upholstery, add pillows for comfort, and pair it with a table that fits the scale of the space.
If you’re looking for more ideas on how to approach the overall design, I’ve shared additional inspiration and common mistakes to avoid in my post on banquette design tips.
And if you’re planning to move forward with a banquette, getting the dimensions right is just as important as the design. I’ve also put together a detailed guide on banquette seating dimensions that covers spacing, seat depth, and how to make it comfortable for everyday use.
Warmly,
Joshua
