Ask Joshua: How Much Does Virtual Interior Design Really Cost?

Hi Joshua,

I’m starting to research virtual interior design services and came across your website. Something I’m trying to wrap my head around is the huge price range I’m seeing online. I’ve found platforms offering virtual design for as little as $150 per room, while other designers charge $5,000 or more for what seems like similar services. I noticed your pricing falls somewhere in the middle, and I’m curious why there’s such a big difference in cost when the services all sound comparable.

Can you help explain why virtual design pricing varies so much from one provider to another—and where your services fit into that range?

Hi Justin,

Great question—and one that almost everyone asks when they first start comparing virtual design options. The truth is, what people call “virtual interior design” can mean everything from a quick concept board to a full remodeling plan created by an experienced designer. That’s why you’re seeing such a wide price range.

So what does virtual interior design usually cost today?

Here is a general breakdown based on what I’ve seen across the industry.

Budget virtual design

Around $150–$600 per room

This usually includes basic visual inspiration, fewer customization options, shorter timelines, and newer designers gaining experience.

Most of these services come from platform-style companies. A couple of important things to keep in mind about these lower-priced options: platform designers typically recommend products only from a limited list of partner vendors, so sourcing isn’t fully open or customized. Independent designers (like myself) can use any vendor or work with vendors clients already prefer.

Also, most platforms don’t encourage an ongoing designer–client relationship once the project ends unless a client purchases additional rooms through the platform. Independent designers, on the other hand, do continue working with clients later on and often develop long-term design relationships. Many of my clients return for future rooms, remodels, or even new homes later on.

Mid-range custom virtual design

Around $700–$2,500 per room

This level generally includes personalized design concepts, floor plans and layouts, multiple rounds of edits, and customized product selections. This is where most experienced online designers fall, especially those who have moved beyond platforms and into running their own design studio.

High-end or full-service virtual design

$3,000–$7,500+ per room

This tends to include renovation guidance, finish and material selections, technical planning, furniture sourcing, and detailed layouts. This level often feels very similar to working with a traditional in-person interior designer—just virtually. These services are usually offered by highly experienced independent designers or full-service firms working at a luxury level.

Where my pricing fits and why

My pricing falls in the mid-range because I offer a completely customized approach for every space—from single rooms to full-house designs, remodels, and new builds. I work with everything from everyday homes to high-end homes and provide a detailed, individualized process without the luxury-firm pricing model.

Experience also plays a big role

Something most people don’t realize is that pricing also reflects the designer’s experience level. Many of the lower-priced platform designers are newer to the industry and are building a portfolio (which is exactly how I started my career, so there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that). As designers gain experience, we typically shift into more customized services, deeper involvement, and more comprehensive design work—which naturally impacts pricing.

I also offer custom pricing based on scope

Because every project has different needs, I offer various service levels depending on project size, timeline, customization, and how involved you’d like me to be. Some clients only need light guidance, while others want full-room or full-home design support.

The real takeaway

Virtual design pricing varies based on level of customization, scope of service, experience of the designer, and how involved the designer becomes in your project. Once you understand what is actually included at each price point, the ranges begin to make a lot more sense.

If you ever want help deciding which level of service fits your home here in Providence, feel free to reach out. I’m always happy to walk through options and help you choose something that makes the most sense for your style, your home, and your goals.

Warmly,
Joshua
