Ask Joshua: Should a Rug Go Under a Bed?
Hi Joshua,
My husband and I are debating if we should place an area rug under our bed in our master bedroom. He thinks that we shouldn’t do it and should put a small rug between the bed and dressser. I feel it would look better if we place a larger rug under the bed. What do you think?

A properly sized area rug helps anchor the bed and create a more balanced, finished bedroom. Designed by virtual interior designer Joshua Jones of JJones Design Co.
Hi Laura,
In most cases, I would recommend placing a larger area rug under the bed rather than using a small rug between the bed and dresser.
A rug placed under the bed helps anchor the room and creates a more cohesive look. Since the bed is typically the largest piece of furniture in the bedroom, having the rug extend beyond the sides and foot of the bed helps visually frame the space and makes the room feel more finished.
Small rugs placed beside the bed or between the bed and dresser can certainly serve a purpose, especially in smaller bedrooms or when working with a limited budget. However, they often feel more like individual accessories rather than an element that ties the entire room together.
That said, every bedroom is different. Room size, furniture layout, existing flooring, and budget can all influence the best solution. In some spaces, a smaller rug may be the most practical choice. In others, a larger rug under the bed can dramatically improve the overall balance of the room.
If you're considering a rug under your bed, selecting the proper size is just as important as deciding where it should go. A rug that is too small can make the room feel disconnected, while a properly sized rug can help create a more polished and intentional look. I recently wrote a guide about choosing the right rug size that may help you decide which option works best for your bedroom.
You may also want to consider using a rug pad underneath the rug to help protect your flooring, add cushioning underfoot, and keep the rug from shifting over time. If your bedroom has wall-to-wall carpeting, area rugs can still work beautifully and add texture, color, and visual interest to the space.
Ultimately, I tend to view an area rug under the bed as part of the room's foundation rather than simply an accessory. When the scale is right, it can help the entire bedroom feel more comfortable, balanced, and complete.
Warmly,
Joshua
