Is there a general rule for choosing a square or rectangular coffee table for a living room or family room?

I have a symmetrical sectional, so either shape could work. I like the idea of a square coffee table for family activities such as puzzles, games, and pizza nights, but a rectangular table would take up less space. How should I decide?

Because your sectional is symmetrical, begin by looking at the shape of the open space it creates. If that area is nearly as wide as it is deep, a square coffee table will usually feel the most balanced. If the opening is long and narrow, a rectangular table may fit more comfortably and preserve better circulation.

A square coffee table works especially well with a symmetrical L-shaped sectional or a sectional with chaises on both sides. Its equal proportions help fill the center of the seating arrangement and make the table accessible from multiple seats. It also provides a generous surface for puzzles, board games, casual meals, and family gatherings.

A rectangular coffee table is often the better choice when the room is narrow or the sectional has one long side with a shorter chaise. It can provide useful surface area without extending too deeply into the room. The elongated shape may also help visually balance a longer sofa or sectional.
